Mandalay Public Debate

The 2nd and 3rd Myanmar EITI Reports, covering 2014 – 2015 & 2015 – 2016 Fiscal Years was held from 1 – 4 PM in Hotel Marvel, Mandalay on January 11, 2019.

The Second (2014 – 2015 Fiscal Year) and Third (2015 – 2016 Fiscal Year) reports, published in March 2018, cover reconciled revenue data and other key information on Oil and Gas, Mining, Gems and Jade, and Pearl sectors. According to EITI standard, it is required to ensure that the EITI reports are widely distributed and public debates on EITI reports are facilitated. Consequently, this public debate was held for the public to discuss the Myanmar EITI process and EITI reports.

There were over 110 attendees to this public debate including Minister of MONREC, Vice-chairman of Mandalay Region Hluttaw, National Coordinator and team, MSG members, Mandalay Sub-national Coordination Unit (SNU) members, officials from respective Government departments, companies and CSOs from Mandalay region, donors, political parties, observers and media.

First, the public debate was opened with the National Coordinator’s greeting remark. The MSG members presented the respective data and information from the MEITI reports and the representative from Myanmar Alliance for Transparency and Accountability (MATA) explained the MEITI Report recommendations. After that, the public debate was begun with the panelists from the Government, Companies representative & CSOs representative. Deputy Director General U Kyaw Thet from Department of Mines, MONREC, Advisor U Than Htay Aung from Myanma Oil & Gas Enterprise, MOEE, Chairman U Khin Mg Han from Myanmar Federation of Mining Associations and Central Executive Committee member Daw Moe Moe Tun from MATA participated as the panelists and Programme Manager U Kyaw Thura from National Coordination Secretariat acted as the moderator.

After the public debate and the Q & A session, the event was successfully closed with the remarks from Minister of MONREC.
