EITI Report Deadline Set on December 30

The first EITI report will be submitted no later than December 30, according to Extractive Industries Transparency Initiatives (EITI) implementation group in Myanmar.

The EITI implementation group of Myanmar decided the last date of report as December 30 at a recent group meeting. The international EITI board has set the deadline for the report on January 2, 2016.

In the report, the taxation on oil and gas industry will be wholly scrutinised, but taxation on the mineral mining industry and the taxation on jade and gems mining will be only partially reported due to a lack of data, said Ko Min Zarni Lin from the EITI implementation group in Myanmar.

“The amount of taxes that companies paid to the government will be included. When this report comes out, the weaknesses of the government and the private sector can be seen in detailed numbers. The difficulty is that some government departments and private companies haven’t kept their records and documents systematically,” he told Myanmar Business Today.

An external company, Moore Stephens, has worked as an auditor for the report and checked the taxation on companies.

“We can’t include hydropower plant projects and the timber industry in this report. We made this decision with the agreement of all members,” Salai Kyone Hlang Htawn, a member of the EITI implementation group, told Myanmar Business Today.

Analysis of the state-owned oil and gas industry and mineral mines will also be included in the report. The ill-fated Letpadaung copper mine case will be included as a special case, Ko Min Zarni Lin said.

“The Letpadaung mine project is still being excavated and the taxation isn’t complete yet. But we are going to put it in as a special case because of the conflict surrounding this project,” he said.
